Pictured above are members of Local 3, IBEW who worked on the con– struction of the new home of the New York Mets, Citi Field, located in Flushing Meadow Park, Queens. Citi Field was constructed under the terms of a project labor agreement.

On Monday April 13, 2009, Citi Field Stadium, the new home for the New York Mets baseball team, opened in Flushing, Queens, on time and under budget.
Ground was broken in 2006 in the parking lot of Shea Stadium and for the next two and a half years Local 3 electricians along with all the other trades of the Building and Construction Trades Council worked under a Project Labor Agreement (PLA) with general contractor Hunt Bovis and the Wilpon family to construct this $850 million dollar state-of-the-art baseball stadium.
Eleven different Local 3 contractors and a maximum of 380 electricians installed systems that included Lights and Power, Telephone and Data, Scoreboards, Audio Visual, Broadcast, Security, Class E Fire Alarm, Building Management (BMS), Computerized Lightning Controls, Site Lighting for parking, and multiple dimming systems. These systems included a 27 KV network, four 13,800 volt distributions, 26 electric closets, 800,000 feet of PVC MC cable in the decks, 7,000 feet of cable tray, 2.4 million feet of audio, video, telephone and data cables, 14,000 fixtures (260 different types) 250,000 feet of feeder conduit, over 1 million feet of feeder cables and 816 field lights.
As you can see the members of Local 3 have done an enormous amount of work in the last two years that all of us can be proud of. I’m sure as these workers pass this stadium in the years to come, they can say with pride that they were one of the electricians that constructed this project.
This work did not come without the appreciation of the Mets ownership. As Local 3 had Shea Stadium for forty four years, there is a year-round maintenance crew and Local 3, IBEW remains the only union that controls the scoreboard operation for all events in a major league baseball stadium.
One of the highlights during the construction was the IBEW web site, Hour Power coming to Citi Field to do a video of the electrical installations for their Electric TV segment. We wish the Mets all the luck this season and especially thank all our Local 3, IBEW brothers and sisters who helped build this Stadium.
